Italy was Roman Catholic - Rome is where the Vatican is.

The rest of Europe can be roughly divided into:

Northern Europe - Protestant, with the exception of Poland which is Catholic.

    Eastern Europe - mostly Orthodox

South Eastern Europe - Mostly Orthodox, with some areas - Albania and Bosnia being Muslim.

Western Europe, - Mostly protestant - except Ireland which is Catholic

Southern Europe, including France - Catholic
