"The Wikimedia Foundation operates Wikipedia. It is a 501(c)(3)status non-profit organization with offices in San Francisco, California. Your donations are tax-deductible in the United States. Our Employer Identification Number: 20-0049703"

Actually, you had it right the first time: it is a tax write-off. Technically, the Wikimedia Foundation that runs Wikipedia is a non-profit organization in the United States. Therefore, donations to Wikipedia made by taxpayers in the United States are tax-deductible.

Though I wonder if you would get much of a write-off for donating a few dollars. If you feel you must absolutely donate hundreds or even thousands of dollars to Wikipedia, I would strongly advise you to put a restriction on it, such as writing "for Internet hosting expenses" in the memo line. But who knows, even then your donation could still go towards buying Jimbo Wales a gold-plated toilet seat for his office bathroom at the Foundation headquarters.
