It depends on year - but the '11 RAV4 advertises 30/38 (in-town vs. highway), and the '11 Liberty is 16/20 - so the RAV4 blows it away.

I commute about 44 miles a day, so i stick with a small car (one I don't care about) - '02 Focus ZX-3 with a 5-speed manual. It typically gets over 40mpg (depending on how I drive it).

I spend my money on my '65 Mustang (289ci w/holley 4bbl & 3-speed automatic). It actually gets decent mileage as long as you don't romp on it. The primaries on the carb are small (since it has the secondaries for vroom), I used to commute in it, and got about 25-30mpg.

    The Rav4 is 22/28 mpg.

The Rav4 is the better choice.

They will probably get 16-20 mpg in normal driving conditions.
