Esbern Glitch in Skyrim?

Question

i am doing the Mission where you need to find Esbern in the ratways, but when I reach his door and activate it I can't hear Esbern talk and the subtitles dissapear in like 2 seconds, then when he says he will open the door I hear it being unlocked but then can't open it. I have tried everything, including the TCL console command, but cant get Esbern to talk to me again to finish the quest. Any suggestions as to what I can do?

For those still with the glitch and the bsa unpack does not work:

It's a file of Esbern's dialogue. Extract it and copy it to the Skyrim Data folder.

Well, for PC go into the console using the tide button ( ` )

Which is left of 1 on the keyboard

Now that you're in the console, put the cursor (mouse) on Esbern and click him.

Now type disable, if it doesn't work try getting closer to Esbern and clicking him again. Now, if disabling him succesfully you will not see him, he will be gone. To bring him back after you've completed the quest, don't click anything and leave the code of esbern atop of the console commands. You can leave console commands (by pressing tide) without losing the code, so you can do the quest and then after go back to console and type enable, their you go :)

The easiest way to just get through the door is to leave the area (once he gets stuck) and come back in. You might have to do this twice. This won't solve the sound issue. You will have to go through that whole sound mod thing to fix that. Additionally this isn't the only possibly Esbern glitch. For example, for me he gets stuck trying to get ready to leave and I can't do anything about that. Basically I recommend avoiding this questline and doing something else until Bethesda releases an Esbern patch, because he has millions of glitches (some are funny can be found on YouTube).

It took a while, but I found a fix on another thread and confirm it worked for me. Here's what you do....

If you don't have it, download Oblivion Mod Manager and install.

Find your skyrim's voicesextra.bsa and open with oblivion mod manager (using the utilities button - BSA browser - Extract all once you find the file located in data of Skyrim)

Extract it into skyrims Data folder. You don't have to drop it into a sub folder.

Once its done, start it up and enjoy not having that bug.

No guarantees it will work for everyone, but I was forever stuck at the negotiation with esbern and this fixed it.

hey listen to the guy who said something about the bsa thing because I was having these ridiculous bugs with esbern too and He stopped being a mute!! btw i got past that part even without his speech by going out of the room and back in then the door was already open. Have fun!!

Used Junky's download like for the BSA unpacker. Worked so now back to quest...

I had the same problem but found a very quick and easy way to fix Esbern's glitch anywhere. For the door you will have to reenter the room twice. Afterward Esbern will start staying in one place forever. Fix this by talking to him (i did twice) everytime he stays in one place. After you close the dialogue, Esbern will proceed through his "script" in the game. Remember to talk to him when he stays in one place. Hope this help!

well i found a way to fix my problem

for me i got esbern out of there then when i got to the inn he wasnt with me and i didnt know where he was so then i just spawned him in the inn code:: player.placeatme 00019dfd

after that he still wouldnt talk or anything and delphine still told me to get him back

so i got ANGRY and started shooting esbern in the face with my bow after about 12 shots it worked he became active again and i finished the quest :)
