The writer may want to entertain his or her audience what does that mean... He or she may want to inform the audience about w hat has occurred what does that mean... Or to persuade the audience ot accept his or her opinion on an issue what does this mean...

When determining what is the author's purpose in a literary piece you have to consider the intended audience and whether the author is trying to persuade, inform or entertain. In most writings it is clear what the author is trying to do; however, you may have to use context clues to assist you.

It means that you understand what message the author was trying to convey in their writing.
