Big banks are national or international, the community banks are prey to community wealth and investors. If you are looking to just use the bank for wages and small savings the local is OK if you are looking at big investments you need to look to the Big Banks for more security.

WikiPedia, or stock-investing sites may help you determine if your bank is owned by another, huge, bank. In the U.S., there are only 4-5 big banks. Many of the rest are credit unions.
