How many chromosomes does a HeLa cell have and why don't these cells contain 46 chromosomes?

HeLa cells are a cancer cell line. As such, the number of chromosomes they have can very considerably. In a single culture, you could find some cells that have 20 chromosomes, and find other cells that have 150. You could also find cells that do contain 46 chromosomes. HeLa cells have a modal chromosome number of 82, and that includes more than two copies of certain chromosomes.
The reason you find such a differing number of chromosomes is because these are cancer cells. There's no orderly cell division that takes place. As such, things you'd normally expect such as each daughter cell getting the same number of chromosomes simply doesn't occur. (There are a lot more reasons, as well)
