I use and recommend Avast free (with the Comodo firewall), but IF I was going to pay for something, I would have to decide between KIS and ESET Smart Security 5.

But to answer the question as you asked it, there is no comparison between Kaspersky Internet Security (full security suite) and Avast free antivirus (antivirus only).

When it comes to internet security, the matter is not about if some thing is paid or free, but about how the job is done and how good its done and at what cost.

There are notably 5 free antivirus solutions that come to my mind when it comes to my mind. Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast, Avira, BidDefender and Comodo. Among these I recommend the first, Microsoft Security Essentials. Its light weight, bundled with Internet Explorer 9 and Windows Firewall you got a great solution protecting your computer.

When you come to the paid areana Norton, Kaspersky and McAfee are the big sharks. All these software add up considerable drag (slows down) to Windows and have a harder learning curve with respect to MSE.

I will include 2 links, the first is about a short description about the 5 antivirus I talked about. The latter is of some of the features MSE has.

If you are going free, I recommend MSE which is as good as any paid software. If you have issues getting things done free, well Kaspersky is at your service. It has some cool features and a great detection engine.

Really it's up to you. Try them out and if you like it, buy it or stick with Avast. Just be aware that KIS 2012 will detect any security programs on your system and ask you to remove them, even SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes plus 3rd-party firewalls - yes it's that pedantic. And even though you already removed them, it'll still ask. For that go to the knowledgebase and look through to find the relevant removal tool.

Kaspersky is a good program so is Avast. Kaspersky does have extra tools like Virtual Keyboard which is very handy to have for typing in sensitive passwords and the keystrokes are not recorded. But at the end of the day, if you don't keep your Windows and applications up to date then your system is still at big risk of getting malware depite having top-notch protection. KIS 2012 have this feature - vulnerability scan and I suggest you use it often if you do buy KIS 2012, otherwise Secunia got 2 tools and both free to use; Online Scan and PSI which is a program you can download and checks your programs and Windows.

Unless you are getting the Pro version of MBAM, you would be better off having Kaspersky.

However, a combination of Avast Free, MBAM Pro (offers a lifetime license) and the free firewall feature of Comodo would also be formidable. It's a good alternative to having annual subscriptions of Kaspersky.

Simply Kaspersky, (it's way better than avast) it may use a little of the pc power (lower the performance of processor but it's going to shield your pc or notebook like an angel!) , and am saying this answer as if it's ok for you to pay for an antivirus.
