heres the deal, man. the r.r. owns all from right of way to right of way. which is basically from fence line to fence line, about 50-75 ft across. what seems like nothing and scratch to you, the r.r. does things in phases. rip up and replace rail, or tie plates or spikes or ties or balast, rock, etc....
seems like it might seems to sit forever, but its always worth something. and its on their yard. they didnt get rich by being stupid. they spend a fortune on this stuff and when it wears out and no use, the materials is still worth alot.....even the rail which is 40 lbs a ft of steel. they let it lay and when the new phase of maintence comes up, the collect and replace and cash in all that old expensive stuff they left on the ground. the r.r. has alot of money, they spend alot, its their stuff, even if trash cause of new, its worth quite a bit. if you want to be honest, call that r.r. and ask if you can clean up for them, chances are they will tell you to get bent, they know its worth money. other than that, don't get caught. most people don't know r.r. cops are armed are federally licensed. they have more weight than any city cop or state trooper. they are feds hired by r.r.'s acct. of the interstate commerece part of it. just letting you know......youre not going to a barney fife when confronted with a r.r. cop. fed license is alot heavier than "name your town" cop or trooper. how can a company have a cop or agent protecting its goods if traveling from state to state? which state you hire? which town? hence federal agent packing for the railroad. i understand what youre asking.......im just laying down the way it is. hope this helps.
r.r. engineer for several years.
