Niagara Falls is actually three separate waterfalls.

Two are situated on the US side of the border and the third is on the Canadian side.

The most accurate answer is BOTH.

Niagara Falls is the name of a set of waterfalls that is found on the Niagara River. On one bank of the river is the province of Ontario (Canada). On the other bank of the river is New York State (USA). Since the falls separate the two countries, the boarder is actually found in the middle of the river. So the Americans have the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls sections of Niagara Falls, and Canadians have the Horseshoe Falls section.

You should also note that the name "Niagara Falls" is also used by the two cities that are closest to the falls. So on the American side, you have a town called Niagara Falls, New York and on the Canadian side you have the town of Niagara Falls, Ontario.

When you are deciding on a trip or buying tickets to stay at a hotel or go to a restaurant in "Niagara Falls" (for example, when reserving a room on Expedia or Travelocity) make sure that you are referring to the CORRECT Niagara Falls! You don't want to be stuck reserving a room in New York when you really wanted to stay at a hotel in Canada, or vice versa.

The Niagara River separates Lake Ontario and Lake Erie and forms the border between Canada and the United States at that point. To the west is Ontario to the east is upper New York state.

The falls themselves are within the river and are shared by both countries.

There are two cities of Niagara -- one on the west side of the river in Ontario Canada, and one on the east side in New York state, United States. of America.
