In the vast majority of cases, no one but the author can know WHY she wrote a particular poem. What we have is the text of the poem itself, and what we can do is to ask what the poem says (literally and figuratively), what argument it is making, if any, about some real-life issue, and how the poet has used the words and literary techniques to make that argument or to convey information to us or to entertain us. Nobody has a machine that can look inside her mind and find out "oh, she wrote this because she had a spare 10 minutes and was bored."
