Why does Taiwan spell Taichung like ''T'aichung'', also ''T'aidong'', ''T'aipei'',what's the apostrophe for?
i was checking the weather in Taiwan, on weather.yahoo.com, if you type any city in Taiwan, a map on the bottom of the page will show up, i saw many cities in Taiwan with the ' in it.

It might have been a leftover appendage from when the Japanese Era names reverted to the Chinese names. See these maps from the late 40s - early 50s.
Or... maybe they just do it to confuse you. LOL
@Oz - Although I agree with you, in that it's not seen on signs, I was quite surprised to see how many online sites still use the " ' " in names. E.g.,
Give it a try in some search words.
@jjohny - I wonder why it's not pronouced "Tai Bei".... and... Who messed up that one?Source(s): WNL

I've never seen the apostrophe spelling locally (street signs, place names, buildings etc.), nor does it appear on Google maps or any other map I've seen.
I'm kinda curious now where you've seen the apostrophe spelling?

It is an accent mark. When you pronounce T'aipei, put more emphasize on "T'".
