What could make a battery powered smoke detector chirp or beep when a light switch is turned on?
We have a smoke detector in the hall. When the light to the bedroom is turned on sometimes the smoke detector chirps or beeps. It has been doing it for years. But we have no idea why?

I agree, sounds like a battery problem. Other possibilities: dust, or bad wiring (detector needs to be replaced). See the link below for more details and instructions.

Battery may need to be replaced or the signals from the light (if it is fluorescent) can cause it. Detector needs to be 3 feet minimum from fluorescent light

Some models will chirp when the battery is in need of a replacement soon. The light may simply be a coincidence. :)
Try replacing that 9v!

Usually this indicates the battery needs replacing
