First half 1/4 th means 14 left the race. remaining 42 out of which 3/7 th means 18 left the race. now only 24 left they finished the race

ie 1/4 * = 14

3/7 * 49 = 18

last 24

1/4 of 56= 14

56-14=42

3/7 of 42= 18

42-18= 24

24 runners finished the race

EDIT----

Damn, some people really suck at maths or don't read questions properly.

"Tany" The question says "1/4 of them dropped out." it doesn't say that 1/4 of them stayed in the race so your calculations are not correct. The only correct answers so far are roxa's and mine.

The answer is 24.

56 (1/4) = 14 (dropped out)

56-14 = 42 left in first half.

42 (3/7) = 18 (dropped out)

42 - 18 = 24 left in the race.

1/4 of 56 is 14

56-14=42

3/7 of 42 is 18

14+18=32, therefore, 32 people dropped out.

56-32= 24, therefore, 24 people finished the race.

Sorry for the mistake i made earlier, i misread the question
