Can I put a dark plastic cover on my license plate (CA)?

Does anyone know where I can find the state law for California, where it says if it's legal or not to put a dark plastic cover over my license plate number?

Thank you!

No, you cannot put ANY kind of covering over a California license plate, even if it does not obscure the plate in any way, except for a non-obscuring cover over just the registration tabs (to protect from theft). (Veh C 5201.) (The law Go AZ cites prohibits obscuring the plate, which is also prohibited, and would apply when this is caused by something other than a cover.)

No - if it obscures, or intends to obscure, the reading or recognition of a license plate

CA also requires a front and back plate.
