Why are LCDs so fickle in their strength?

My sister's cell phone's LCD screen recently broke, because something poked the screen too hard. Yet as hard as I press on the same LCD screen, nothing else breaks. Why do LCDs behave like diamond one minute and glass the next?

It depends on when it was made and what materials are used. Nowadays, lots of smartphones (high end and some mid range) use gorilla glass with the lcd of whatever manufacturer they came from. The results are a stronger and more scratch resistant glass.

I don't know what caused your sister's lcd screen to crack, but what phone model was it? It could be that the lcd was weak because that's what happened to my first smartphone.
