Update:

Lori-Many Mexicans are descended from Spanish immigrants, does that make me a Spaniard?

They are confused. A trait they inherited from their ancestors.

Many citizens in Quebec are descended from French ancestors. They maintained the language and much of the culture, and are often referred to as "French Canadian." That differentiates them from the rest of Canada which still has a very close relationship with England.

Mexicans have predominantly native ancestry, some are mixed (white and Native), and only a minority are fully Spanish. Their situation is not comparable to the the Quebecois, who are predominantly of French descent.
