Many years ago, you were not eligible to vote unless you owned property.

It seems fair to say that if you DO NOT pay taxes, you are going to vote for the person who will give you FREE STUFF. And the people who DO pay taxes are the ones who have to pay for it and have no say on how their money is wasted.

    Our system is definitely flawed.

Employers pay payroll taxes on every person they hire, as well as various other taxes on their revenue. These costs are paid for by everyone who works, in the form of lower pay, and everyone who buys anything, in the form of higher prices. If you work or you buy anything, you pay taxes. Just because someone doesn't pay an income tax doesn't mean they don't pay taxes. Only 45% of the US federal government's revenue even comes from income taxes (1) This question reflects a gross misunderstanding of hour our tax system works. There isn't even a way to begin seriously answering this question since everyone pays taxes.

  • No, because if a person loses their job and has no income they would not be allowed to vote, plus homeless people would not be allowed to vote if only taxpayers were allowed to vote. On average less than half of eligible voters vote right now and if you put a tax on it the number of those who actually vote would decrease even farther.

No. People who aren't earning enough to pay taxes need to have the power of the vote.

  • How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.

Not at all. People who paid taxes all their lives and are now getting social security would be left out. So would all people on disability. What about disabled veterans, tell me they don't deserve to vote!
