Help with this algebra math problem?

A canoeist rows downstream in an hour and a half and back upstream in 3 hours. What is the rate of the current if the canoest rows 9 miles in each direction?

    d=rt often referred to as "dirt"

    d stands for distance

    r stands for rate

    t stands for time

    distance = 9 miles

    rate=your figuring that out

    time=1 and 1/2 for the first one and 3 for the second one.

    You'll be setting up two equations since you have 1 1/2 hours and 3 hours

    1 and 1/2 is the same as 3/2


    9=3/2x AND 9=3x
