A canoeist rows downstream in an hour and a half and back upstream in 3 hours. What is the rate of the current if the canoest rows 9 miles in each direction?

d=rt often referred to as "dirt"
d stands for distance
r stands for rate
t stands for time
distance = 9 miles
rate=your figuring that out
time=1 and 1/2 for the first one and 3 for the second one.
You'll be setting up two equations since you have 1 1/2 hours and 3 hours
1 and 1/2 is the same as 3/2
9=3/2x AND 9=3x
