help building a car stereo system?

Driving a 2000 Mazda 626. It has 2 speakers on the front doors, and 2 right behind the back seats. I'm looking to completely overhaul my factory stereo, replacing all the speakers and the head unit.

My main issue is that I have absolutely no knowledge about the differences between head units, speakers, speaker types, amps, woofers, etc.

So my question is, can anyone give me a grand explanation, or link me to a few websites with guides/ forums that I could use to basically know everything there is to know about car stereo/audio systems and/or installation

Also some recommendations on good Brands, setups, etc. would be nice. I'm looking to spend no more then $500 for the initial system (4 main speakers, head unit, maybe amp if necessary). Eventually (if not initially) I will be putting subs in the trunk, and i absolutely hate to see vehicles riding around with so much bass that the trunk is obnoxiously rattling, so if anyone has some tips to stop rattling or to keep it to a minimum that would be of great help as well.

Thanks in advanced.

Check these sites is a good reference.

    - Also check this out and all related videos...Look for the guy in the blue collared shirt. Type “car audio systems” in the search engine. He gives a lot of very good info.

If your headlight dims with the bass notes, the “BIG 3” might work. If not an H.O. alternator will be needed, or else be prepared to pour a lot of $$$ for batteries.

This site explains the "BIG 3" upgrades.

I've designed my car for SQ (Sound Quality) not SPL (Sound Pressure Level) my imaging is very good. The bass sounds as if it is up front and my 12 inch sub (picture as shown) in the trunk. I LOVE how it all worked out.

    GOOD LUCK and have fun…
