What added benefit is there for an aircraft to VTOL rather than STOL?
What is the benefit of having an aircraft that can take off vertically as well as horizontally?
Thanks very much

VTOL can scramble faster than than a stol, but there's catch if it's a jet or jet rocket assist very short range because of fuel consumption.

VTOL would not need a runway, just a prepared apron.
And a VTOL would be able to clear out obstacles that would prevent a conventional aircraft from taking off. Add to this the implied capacity to hover, and you got the summary of benefits.

Better have a STOL
Some can even take off and land in 10ft
not much different than a VTOL but it consumes less fuel and more accessible to public
Harriers and such are not sold to bush pilots
And to prove that I am not exaggerating here are some serious STOL aircraft which can take off and land in 10 ft

VTOL, (verticle take off and landing) much like a helicopter, does not need a runway. STOL , short takeoff and landing still need some amount of "runway" to land or takeoff, thus they need more open space.Source(s): TL

something which could land on a gap could additionally land on an prolonged strip of pavement, whether or not they actually hire the completed strip is distinctive yet a helicopter (VTOL) can land on a great runway. all VTOL aircrafts are STOL yet not all STOL are VTOL. incredibly much like how all bourbons are whiskeys yet now all whiskeys are bourbons or how all squares are rectangles yet not all rectangles are squares.

Wider variety of takoeoff and landing locations. Some serious STOL can takeoff in less than 300 feet. pretty impressive
