"a response to something" is a phrase.

Don't replace "to" with other prepositions, like "about", "for" or "of".

With "of", you get different meanings, like "the response of the audience to the performance"; "the response of her flesh to his touch"- it's the audience's response or the flesh's response, but then you need a "to" for the object of the response.
