Because Alaskan residents are considered shareholders in the state, and are thus considered entitled to a stake in the wealth generated from royalties paid by oil and gas companies to drill on public lands.

Considering the very seasonal nature of much employment in Alaska due to its very northerly location, this is like a third rail of Alaskan politics.

Moreover, it's a mistake to consider this socialism; it's more based in the Social Credit (modified distributist) theories from which the present Canadian Conservative government takes its ideological lineage. If you look at the originators of this theory, you'll see how profoundly it is based in old-style conservatism, and how profoundly it rejects Marxian socialism.

Well, The private companies take the oil wealth. The Alaskan government taxes the private companies. They give the tax money to the citizens. So they redistribute the wealth from the private sector to the citizens. You take from the rich companies and give to the citizens, regardless of what they do or add to the real economy. The justification is that they live on the land. So you "share the wealth."

Mainland USA gets to pay for the oil and Alaska has a huge windfall profit when market prices rise.

    Not socialism, sorry.

Louisiana could learn a thing or two from this.

Every state should be doing this for their people, instead of selling the resources with no benefit to the residents.

Then the money the people earn is spent, mostly within the state, which helps the economy there.

    What's your question again?.

It sure beats letting the government have it. If this was a true socialist government the citizens wouldn't see a dime of that oil money as it gets divided up between the company and the congress.

That is amusing to me because Bush actually gave stimulus checks to the people, he got demonized for it. Obama decided the people were too irresponsible and he gave it to failed auto companies and big banks.

Because you can see Russia from your house up there, which makes all Alaskans experts on foreign relations.
