    句子最後有個of, because it is in passive voice.

    Rewrite in active voice: For months, I despaired of life.

    despair is an intransitive verb It can take on a preposition "of" to mean 喪失信心.


    (Active voice) I disposed of my old books.

    (Passive voice) My old books were disposed of.
