Error and Estimation

A square plate is of size 15 x 15 cm. correct to the nearest cm. A square of size 3 x 3 cm.(also correct to the nearest cm.) is cut away from one of the corners of the plate. Find the range of value of area of the newly formed plate.

    Rage of the area of the original square plate is:

    Max. A = 15.5 x 15.5 = 240.25

    Min. A = 14.5 x 14.5 = 210.25

    Rage of the area of the cut square plate is:

    Max. a = 3.5 x 3.5 = 12.25

    Min. a = 2.5 x 2.5 = 6.25

    Hence:

    Max. A - a = 240.25 - 6.25 = 234

    Min. A - a = 210.25 - 12.25 = 198

    So the range of area of the newly formed plate is between 198 cm2 and 234 cm2.
