History homework help! Please! Simple question just confused.?
Question: How did the clergy ( First Estate ) do for society (how did help people?) that might justify a lower tax rate?
Quoted on textbook: "The Roman Catholic Church, whose clergy formed the First Estate, owned 10 percent of the land in France. It provided education and relief services to the poor and contributed about 2 percent of its income to the government."

They used 10% of the land in France to teach and aid. They made school or hospitals. Then they gave back 2% of their money to the french government. They're niceness and charity work would justify a lower tax rate.Source(s): Eh. I'm still an athiest.
