# Help me please?! Algebra 1!?

You are descending from the top of a 32 foot tall rock climbing wall at an average rate of -2.3 feet per minute. How many feet off the floor are you in 5 minutes? in 10 minutes? Approximately when will you reach the group?

I got all the way down to the 10 minutes one....you are 23 feet off the floor in 10 minutes...which leave you with 9 feet to go....but im not sure how to do the rest. I was thinking 9 divided by 2.3 but i wasn't sure

I dont think im doing it right at all. why cant anyone help me?!?!

I'll just solve all 3 parts so you can see how I do it.

initial height - (rate per minute * minutes) = feet above the floor

32 - (2.3 * 5) = 20.5 ft off the floor

32 - (2.3 * 10) = 9 ft off the floor

32 - (2.3 * X) = 0

^^Substitute X for the 'number of minutes' because that's what you're trying to find

Plug 0 in for 'feet above the floor' because you want to be on ground level

32 = 2.3 * X

32 / 2.3 = X

X = about 14 minutes until you reach the floor

Is the group at the bottom? If so, its:

t = d / v = 32 ft / 2.3 ft/min = 13.9 min

-2.3ft/60s= xft/300

60x=-690

x= -16ft

-2.3ft/60s=xft/600

60x=-1380

x=-23ft

-2.3/60s=-32ft/xs

-2.3x=-1920

x=834secs

x= 13.9 mins

13 mins, 54 seconds or ~14 mins

just use the opposite proportion! :) Hope this helps!

I'll assume that the 2.3 isn't negative. multiply 2.3 times five and subtract it from 32. simple :)
