Should Congress 'bail out' the United States Postal Service?
The Post Master General claims that USPS can not sustain itself any longer unless they cut out saturday service. The Letter Carriers Union claims that there is available 125 million sitting in funds controlled by Congress. USPS has been losing revenue at about 10 Billion annually; was 75 Bil then 65 Bil and so on. The reason they are crying poor mouth is because the Government is now making them pay medical and retirement costs UP FRONT, and so they think that because their mismanagement is causing them to lose 10 Bil a year, that the TAX PAYERS should bail them out!
USPS is not a Government organization. It is Private.

let me just say this to you Raymond and cut to the main issue.
The post office of a country that belongs to the people should not be a "private organization".
A post office of a country is one of those things like many things that help the country and society function and actually serves communications and speech...which means it helps "free speech". That being said, this means that the post office of a country should be funded by the people of that country..like many other things are funded like the military, the roads, the space program, etc..etc..
The post office of a couuntry should be funded by tax payers....yes citizens and users of the post office should pay something for the services they use...like 40 cents for a stamp etc...even if the true cost of mainling letters should be 80 cents a stamp...its a good thing and a good idea for the society to fund the deficit...because its simply good for society to have to service available. The alternative is to say .....oh well....that we will make the whole thing private and subject to true costs to users like even if the cost of mailing a letter is $3.00 that citizens just have to pay it if they want to use it...this attitude is not good for democracy and free speech and not compatible to the notion of country, society and representative govt as it hands over a crucial national and societal service to the whims of business and profit seek. My argument is not one that says the everything in a society should be socialized, like socialized cell phone service, or socialized big screen TV's or socialized Restaurant or autobody shops....I am just saying that there are some things that are so important to the society as a whole, so important to life, liberty and happiness that society is better served by having it socialized or partly socialized.
I always chuckle when people talk about how the post office not having enough money or losing money is a sign of how govt should not run things...no its not...its merely a sign of govt not funding something that it says is valuable. It just means that the govt should have been contributing to the funding of the post office or contributing more in addition to the revenue stream from users. Its a sign of our national personality disorder of saying we believe in somethings with our lips but our actions not backing it up.

We already do not get mail on two Saturdays per month. The Postal Service is self funded.

people who have no scientific coverage might pick to. no person would be compelled to take part in a central authority application merely as no person is compelled to flow to a public college. there is no foundation (different than the Reagan and Bush administrations doing each and everything they are in a position to to make it so) to have self belief that publicly owned companies are inherently poorly run. the final airline in the international is majority owned via the Singapore government.

Cut out the Saturday service. Renegotiate contracts. Cut costs and then maybe we can talk about what else is needed.

The Post Office IS the United States.
That's like asking if we should bail out the US Air Force.
Or maybe you are against bailing out the United States Of America?
