The 1,500 - 2,000 dollars range is where many bike manufacturers sell most of their road bikes. The competition among manufacturers for this price range is very tough. As a result, you can find some good quality bikes and often times a good bargain of previous year models. It's not "top of the line" by a long shot.
The biggest question for you is, do you want to keep it for some time as it is, do you plan on getting some upgrade overtime, or do you plan to get another bike in a year or two? These considerations will affect your decision.
I agree with wle. At this price range, I'd rather have an aluminum frame with the best component I can get. You certainly can get a carbon frame bike at this price range. But there will be compromised by some slightly lower end components.
