I am a sucker for English monarchy so Henry VIII is a central figure. His break with the church of Rome forever changed England.
Elizabeth I brought forth the golden age of England. She is England's first successful female monarch. She lives in infamy for the title the "Virgin Queen" (the colony virginia is named after her). Her encouragement of "pirates" like Francis Drake deeply influenced things in America
Charles I first was the an Monarch executed in 1649, and England was ruled by a commonwealth for ten years under Oliver Cromwell (puritan). If you look closer you could see how the Puritans in England influenced the puritans in America during the Salem witch trials.
Finally francois I of France. considered the first Renassiance king (he encouraged leonardo da vinci and a lot of Frances architecture)
