What actor did Michael J. Fox replace for the role of Marty McFly in Back to the Future?

Eric Stoltz was originally cast as Marty McFly because Michael J Fox was tied up with filming for 'Family Ties' but after filming started they realised that Stoltz was miscast and the producers of 'Family Ties' and 'Back to the Future' worked out a schedule for Fox to film both.
It meant he would spend all day filming on the set of 'Family Ties' and then get rushed to the set of 'Back to the Future' to film most of the night getting 3 or 4 hours sleep each night.
He tells you all about it in his autobiography 'Lucky Man' which I thoroughly recommend everyone to read. It covers his childhood in Canada; his move to Hollywood and subsequent stardom; his alcoholism and his discovery that he has Parkinsons Disease.Source(s): 'Lucky Man a Memoir' by Michael J Fox

Michael J. Fox was the first choice but was committed to Family Ties so they were going to use Eric Stoltz or C Thomas Howell. They chose Stoltz and started filming. Michael J. Fox was able to do it after all when, in January 1985, Meredith Baxter returned to Family Ties following her pregnancy. So they recast the role, gave it to Fox and refilmed the movie.
