My honest advice is that the photographer you're working with is trying to take a seriously cheesy photograph. I love that they want to bring out the "real you" but doing it by bringing in props is begging to be posted on "awkwardfamilyphotos.com".... That being said I suggest that your family pools together thoughts about their normal wardrobe to pick something which is very complimentary but still "you"... if you all agree to wear denim or black pants start with that then pick a color which looks good on everyone and then pick various pieces of clothing which you would wear on any given day. For a dad, maybe he would wear a plaid shirt with blue stripes on it with a white undershirt. If you have a brother, have him wear a blue tshirt with a blue sports hat. If you have a punky sibling, maybe he/she wears blue converse and a blue spiked belt with a black shirt. Mom might wear a prettier more mature blue shirt to match the blues everyone else is wearing. If you're into sewing and jewelry making WEAR YOUR STUFF with maybe a blue cardigan or something.
If you want a non-cheesy candid photograph of your family try hiring a person to come to your home to capture you and your family doing your thing in a more natural environment.... bringing your sewing machine into a studio to lay it down on a background isn't natural.
I used to work for picture people (super cheesy photo studio) and now I work for a top wedding/child/family photographer.
