Why was the book ,"Jean Van Jean" later turned into the musical, "Les Miserables?"?
Why didn't they keep the title Jean Van Jean For the musical?

Les Miserables was written by Victor Hugo in five volumes:
5) Jean Valjean
Since the musical includes stories from all five books, it was named after the series title and not just one of the books.

The character in the novel by Victor Hugo was ex-convict Jean Valjean the novel was at first divided into five volumes: Fantine, Cosette, Marius, The Idyll in the Rue Plumet and the Epic in the Rue St. Denis, and Jean Valjean. Small wonder they cut all that down to "The Miserable Ones" (Les Misérables) for book and play
