Is Microsoft Security Essentials any good?

According to the advertising, Microsoft Security essentials is free to Windows users (i.e. me), it's quick, and it's top-notch anti-virus, spyware, malware etc protection. It all sounds a bit too good to be true. Is it? Or should I go ahead and download it?

I'm an IT engineer and during the last 10 years I've had the chance to test out a large variety of anti-virus software and I can honestly say that MSE is probably one of the best anti-virus software out there if you are looking for the following criteria : free, easy to use, effective, performance impact.

Personally I would recommend MSE to anyone who knows how to properly use the internet but to the usual freecare folks that don't know the first thing about computers I would strongly recommend a payable ant-virus solution.

Microsoft Security Essentials works well with the Windows firewall and does not slow your computer down as much as other things. Also updates regularly.

MSE know all of the Windows processes inside and out. Besides, they build the OS. MSE did extremely well at removing malware comparitively.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free download from Microsoft.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware works well with MSE, provided that you get the free version, which doesn't have real-time protection. There's a chance of bad interactions with MSE if MBAM’s real-time protection is turned on. Install the free version, then update it and run scans occasionally.

Install the WOT (Web of Trust) add-on - is a community-based, free safe surfing tool for browsers that provides website ratings & reviews to help web users as they search, surf & shop online.

Also suggest, Use a secure DNS server that filters Malware such as Norton DNS will also add an extra layer of protection.

Always keep your Windows, web browser and Java software up to date - frequent patches are released to plug security holes.

All are great programs and totally free, and you will be totally fine!

I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials for quite some time and have very good success with it. There isn't any security software that is 100% effective, but MSE is the best of the free stuff. I load it on every computer that I build for resale.

I Use the Paid for ESET Smart Security. (Has Malware Protection)

Yet i still use Malwarebytes for Removing Malware. (It's The Best)

So I'd say the chances of it being any good vs Malware/Spyware is Slim.

Though i do Hear good Reviews about MSE.

    Hope it helps :)

P.S: ALL Antivirus advertise well and claim to be the best. (Even the Crap Ones)

Yes it is very well thought of and has been recommended by many computer magazines.

The updates come under Widows Update as an option. Some days the programme updates automatically but most days I have to check for an update this is very quick and the update is installed in 30 seconds.

    Updates are twice a day.

It's good but not the best. I personally use Kaspersky. There are some other good free antivirus programs.

    Avast! Free Antivirus

    Avira AntiVir Personal Edition

    Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE)

Yes, it's very good. The first update is time consuming, but after that it's fine. Just make sure you get the appropriate version,ie 32 or 64 bit.
