Paris is the county seat of Lamar County. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city was 25,171 – a 2.8 percent decline from the previous census in 2000. Paris has basic amenities due to its position as a sizable community in a largely rural area. It also serves as a major employment center for the surrounding area. Shopping and dining options are limited, although Sherman (approx. 60 miles to the west) and Dallas (approx. 105 miles to the southwest) are relatively close.

Regarding crime and safety, one of the earlier posters (nelgin) posted a link to Paris' profile on city-data.com. If you scroll about halfway down the page, you will find crime statistics for the city dating back to 1999. While the overall crime rate is slightly above the national average, Paris isn't a violent or dangerous city. Since 2006, the crime rate has generally declined. If you observe the normal safety precautions that are recommended to everyone regardless of location, you should be fine in Paris.

If you have children, the city of Paris is served by three Independent School Districts (ISDs) – Paris, North Lamar, and Chisum. Paris ISD is the largest of the three and serves most of the city. North Lamar ISD is an expansive district that serves northern Lamar County, including the northern portion of Paris. Chisum ISD is the smallest district and serves southern parts of Paris. Chisum and North Lamar have higher standardized test scores and ratings in comparison to Paris ISD.

The following websites provide additional information on Paris:

Everything Paris (city guide & directory) - http://www.eparistexas.com/

Lamar County Chamber of Commerce - http://www.paristexas.com/

I hope this helps and best of luck with your move.

= Paris Texas is a good place to live if you like small cities that practically offer nothing in social, family or job wise.

Paris is one of those small towns, two hours from anywhere and, I think, somewhat of a close knit community.
