rare is still very pink inside (great for filet), medium rare will still have a thin line of pink (not recommended for burgers) while well done is brown all the way thru

the difference is how long you cook the meat. rare is nearly raw in the middle, still red and bleeding. well done is fully cooked, brown all the way through, and often dry. medium is in between, a little bit of pink and a good amount of moisture. most people won't cook a rare hamburger, because the meat has been ground up, meaning it all has been exposed to outside contaminates, but it's fine on a steak because the inside has NOT been exposed to any outside bacteria. there's also medium rare, and medium well, which are the in-betweens of these options.

Rare is the least cooked, generally has a warm red center, medium has a warm pink center, and well done is brown all the way through. I only eat burgers well done, but steak I usually like cooked medium or sometimes medium rare.

Rare is a cold red center...raw center pretty much, just brown on the outside. Medium rare is a warm, bloody center. Over easy eggs are fried eggs cooked just enough to be done with the yolk still intact.
