does yahoo answers alert you when someone has posted additional details to a question you answered?
do they alert you by sending you an email or do u have to go back to the question to see that?

No they do not and that is why editing and posting additional details are useless except to give new answers more information

Yahoo attracts the OCD type. We check questions and read our brilliant contacts and own answers over and over and over and over again.
There are even a few of us (dedicated lifers) that go back to very old questions to see if anyone commented in the comment section.

No they don't it has been asked for and also for when a comment is left on a resolved question, but it has not happened yet.
