I am interested in doing a project on JAVA cryptography.?

I am a 4th year engineering student, and have recently decided that i want to take up cryptgraphy as my college project....I know basic java and would like to know what all is needed to make a project like this and also from where can i get information about the algo's and other things required for this project.
