Can someone explain power supply connectors to me?

I'm trying to get a new video card, which requires a new power supply as well. The card, a 9800 gtx+, has two 6-pin connectors. Can you explain the pins? Can you explain the pins? Are the connectors supposed to connect from the card to the power supply, vice versa, or are they completely detachable? How do I know if a power supply is compatible with 6-pin connectors. Some PSU's I'm looking at say they have :

1 x Main connector (20+4Pin)
1 x 12V(P4)
4 x peripheral
2 x SATA

Will the 20+4 work with the 9800 gtx+? Whats up with that.
