Fall-blooming perennials are asters, goldenrod, joe pye weed, ironweed, and mums. (Not all mums will come back every year, depends on the variety, and where you live).
Asters are my favorites because they make a bigger bunch every year, and are an intense purple color!

tulipa species tulipa (non hybrid, wild tulip with pretty candy stripe petals and groundcover habit)
See Parks seed catalog for more ideas.
Also marigolds/french marigolds, autumn gold rose, rosa rugosa and rosa rugosa magnifica (in pots if you're afraid of suckers).
