Many Failed Efforts to Count Nation's Federal Criminal Laws

-

WASHINGTON—For decades, the task of counting the total number of federal criminal laws has bedeviled lawyers, academics and government officials.

"You will have died and resurrected three times," and still be trying to figure out the answer, said Ronald Gainer, a retired Justice Department official.

In 1982, while at the Justice Department, Mr. Gainer oversaw what still stands as the most comprehensive attempt to tote up a number. The effort came as part of a long and ultimately failed campaign to persuade Congress to revise the criminal code, which by the 1980s was scattered among 50 titles and 23,000 pages

Doesn't sound like you really have a question, rather that you want to rant. The reason I say rant is because you take everything to the nth degree. If you want a lesson in life, travel a bit abroad, and then come back here with your question. Many Countries use the Police to cower the populace, that is not the case here. Can we be better, absolutely, but remember, the Police only reflect our Society, the more screwed up the Society, the same goes for the Police! The reason our jail numbers are high, is because we have a violent Society, guns are too prevalent, we are more adept at catching criminals, and an open Society lends itself to more people trying to get something for nothing. You would like most other Countries Police a lot less.

Lets see now - Federal Criminal Laws- anything that could be a crime.

    WE HAVE THE FOLLOWING:

United States Codes (2006 / 50 volumes -published every 6 years with 4 to be added next year)

    Federal Register

Code of Federal Regulations (CFR - 50 titles)

Procedural Laws (Criminal / Civil) See Your own state and local laws, these are adapted from the Federal laws, so appeals are uniform and consistent..

    Substantive laws (Criminal, Civil, Contract)

Counting all that could be violated as a crime, some mind boggling here1, 298,000 laws or regulations
