What is the "peloton" in cycling?

Ok so i watched almost the whole tour de france and the whole time the commentators were talking about a "peloton." what is this?

    It's the main body of riders. Not the attack group or the chase group(s), nor the guys who lag behind alone or in small groups. It's the biggest body of bike riders you see.

    Peloton means small ball in french. That is where the most of the riders ride in order to conserve energy. The riders in the back can ride at the same speed as the ones in front and use 30% less energy.
