Not a good idea. In addition to it not being to code, most 240 appliances require more amperage than a standard 120v, 15 or 20 amp breaker and wiring can handle. At best, you couldn't keep the breakers from constantly tripping, and at worst, you could have a real melt down.

If the two breakers were on different legs, but to be code compliant the breakers would have to be bonded together (for starters). You'd be better off running a new circuit.
