Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons (compounds of hydrogen and carbon). It is hard to determine the exact composition because each crude oil variety has a unique mix of molecules. Generally, crude oil contains:

the alkanes, which are saturated hydrocarbons, contain only C and H.the cycloalkanes, which are saturated hydrocarbons and similar to the alkanes, but cycloalkanes differ from alkanes of its special carbon ring.the aromatic hydrocarbons, which are unsaturated hydrocarbons and have one or more benzene rings (6-carbon-ring, C6). Benzene and most of its derivatives are regarded as carcinogenic.

As a result, crude oil is carcinogenic and mostly due to the aromatic hydrocarbons it contain.
