Who will the public blame if the government shuts down on August 2, 2011?

Democratic Party? The GOP?

....

Or will people actually grow a pair and blame themselves for voting them in the first place? Haha. Let's be rational now.

    • Obviously everyone will blame the president because he is supposed to make things happen. Yes we voted them in but the reason we vote them in is to they enact upon our wishes. So the first issue with that is as a people we all have different wants and needs. So the politicians chosen to act upon our behalf are split because not everyone can be satisfied especially when we are so split. Now ideally this would be the only case. However most importantly. How many people actually contact their officials to provide them guidance or voice what we want done. We are such a busy society no one can takes the time needed to use the liberties we have and instruct our representatives to do. Are we sure they even would? I think we are at a point where the politicians are acting upon their own behalf instead of the peoples. Take Minnesota for example. They are at an impasse because the governor wants to raise taxes on 2% of the wealthy. This doesn’t make sense as the 2% of the wealthy represented less than 10% of the total vote. So who are they protecting? In conclusion we as a people have lost this country. We no longer run the country or are in control of what happens. We would have to make major changes to get back to the point where we actually influenced the decisions of politicians. This will not happen because we cannot agree as a people which direction we want out former great nation to go.

No one said anything about closing the government on Aug 2. You certainly have a point about a lot of blame being passed around, including on the public; but let us get real, if Aug 2 comes without at least a 2.5 trillion dollar debt reduction plan in place including more taxation on the wealthy along with cuts to entitlements, then the GOP, especially the tea party wing of it, will be to blame

Edit: To the clown below me, if the government defaults on its debt (like I said, the government shutting down is not the issue), then the immediate consequences to the economy are nothing short of catastrophic...interest rates will rise, the economy will sink into another recession. Businesses will not hire, pushing up the already unacceptable unemployment figures. Then there are the long term consequences...

Closing parks and rest stops is such an asinine "consequence" it really shows that you have no idea what you are talking about

The 2011 funds replace into meant to be in place NLT 30 September 2010, a term that democrats had administration of ALL 3 branches of government, THEY (democrats) did no longer do their activity, if there's a central authority close down it falls squarely on the shoulders of the democrats the place it belongs. The 2011 funds is an argument that ought to no longer be in front of Congress at present, it is going to have been resolved over 7 months in the past.

Republicans have given Democrats 2 possible options, one of which gives unprecedented power to the president to control the debt ceiling. The only reason why that plan is not popular among Democrats is because it would make them completely responsible for any action they choose in raising the debt ceiling.

Blame? You make it sound like a government shut down will be a bad thing.

Ooh, parks and rest stops will close. Parades might get canceled. What a tragedy.

It won't shut down and America will not default on its loans.

Democrats want more welfare for the lazy and Republican want more welfare for corporate cronies. Both parties have vested interest in NOT defaulting.

No 'shutdown' - Obama will see to it that the money is there to continue to work, whether the repubs like it or not.
