-----YOU ARE ALL WRONG LOL-------Actually guys americans did NOT come up with the word soccer. soccer was invented in england and it was called Association football, to distinguish from other football like sports such as rugby football, as it was called at the time. When the clubs and schools started playing the game, it wwas a common convention to nickname things by adding -er and the end, so association football was shortened to assoccer (from association) and subsequently to soccer, or soccer football. So really both names are applicable, and both were invented by the English when the game was in its earliest phases. Sorry to the Europeans on here who bash America for coming up with a seemingly nonsensical name, you are mistaken.
