One unique Malaysian food is the nyonya (or Baba-Peranakan) food that is an interesting mix of Chinese & Malay - kind of heritage fusion cuisine resulted from the era of inter-racial marriage between Chinese and Malays during the 18&19 century. It is common in Melaka & Penang, but also available in major cities such as Kuala Lumpur, as well as in Singapore. There are many popular dishes within this style of cooking, but some favourite ones include Sambal Kangkung or Belacan Kangkung, Ayam Pongteh, Sambal Udang, Asam Pedas and many others. And there are many popular nyonya cakes & desserts including ang-koo kueh, kueh pie-tee, not forgetting burbur cha-cha.

Have you ever tried the satay? Meat on sticks dipped into lemon grass- peanut sauce. It's delicious. http://www.seleramalaysia.com/2010/04/chicken-sata... I hope you can get all the necessary ingredients.

The beef rendang with white rice or saffron rice (nasi kunyit) is another nice dish

Banana fritter (goreng pisang) is originally a Malaysian snack. http://almostbourdain.blogspot.com/2009/06/malaysi...

You can also try Apam Balik.
