It is a common misconception that each of us is obliged to love our family. Our siblings, cousins, even our own parents are merely other individuals who happen to come together through genetics. Love is not genetic and although it would be the ideal, we do not love simply because we are related. You love someone (including family) because of how they make you feel- safe, nurtured, a sense of belonging, acceptance, etc. If these things are absent, we do not feel loved and it is most difficult to give love. Thousands of children are abused by "family." There exists, parental abuse. Being in a family does NOT guarantee love and acceptance. This I know tragically from personal experience.
