If there were to be a "psychedelic metal", what would it be?

Post one song or more that you think would fit well under the nonextistant subgenre "psychedelic metal".

Have fun!

Psychedelic metal exists. Heavy metal was literally born from psychedelic music.

Blue Cheer is the most famous psychedelic metal band, but there are others: Iron Butterfly, Black Pearl, even Black Sabbath's Cream-inspired first album still had vestiges of psychedelia in it... Uriah Heep's early albums were fairly psychedelic... Blue Oyster Cult's debut has some residual psychedelia in it.

    Blue Cheer "Summertime Blues"

    Iron Butterfly "Iron Butterfly Theme"

    Uriah Heep "Traveler in Time"

Blue Oyster Cult "She's as Beautiful as a Foot"

Start them both and see if they intersect. The Psychedelic Psychic Sidekick Relic. Clearly its a revisiting of the time Sherlock and Watson tangled with a bad batch of mushrooms during the case of The Giant Rat of Sumatra.

Probably something from the 60s, when metal was still related to stoners and whatnot.

This song might be a good contender! Definitely psychedelic but with a metal edge to it.

Pink Floyd's Ibiza bar and Nile Song from their second album are Floyd's heaviest stuff and still on the psychedelic side.

No one has mentioned Queensryche yet?

This looks like an old question, it's doubtful you'll be coming back to check on it after all this time. Still, I'd like to put in my two cents just in case.

I noticed a few people listed old progressive or "proto-metal" bands like King Crimson and Blue Cheer. These bands can certainly be pretty psychedelic, but that's probably not the idea of "metal" you were going for.

Try the more recent stoner or desert rock movements. These and a few other scenes featuring heavy riffs with trippy lyrics and sound effects emerged in the 90's and still run pretty strong today, if mostly unnoticed by the general public.

To name a few, check out:

    Wo Fat

    Acid King

    Colour Haze

    Atomic Bitchwax

    Causa Sui

Also look into the bands Witchcraft and Graveyard. While not as heavy as some of the others I listed, these two groups from Sweden are definitely psychedelic. Especially Graveyard's first album.

Finally, check out the website Music Roamer. If you like any of these suggestions, type their name into the search box and it will bring up a web of related artists. Double click on one of those, and it expands the web to show more like that one.

The closest thing to what would be Psychedelic Metal is Freakbeat

    The Smoke-My Friend Jack

    The Misunderstood-CHildren of the Sun

The Creation-Making Time<----For anyone who thinks Jimmy Page was the 1st to take a bow to his guitar, this guitarist is doing it 3 years before Jimmy did!

    Another non-existent genre that exists....

Stuff that's not clearly defined as such that still applies:

    Electric Wizard

    Earth (good to trip to)

    Wolves in The Throne Room
