# What would you subtract from each side to solve for k?

Goal: To get "k" isolated by itself.

a.) 0 = 14 + k

In order to isolate k, we need to subtract 14 from both sides and then solve.

0 = 14 + k

0 - 14 = 14 - 14 + k

-14 = k

Answer: You need to subtract 14 from both sides.

b.) -0.8 = k + 3.3

Same here. We need to subtract 3.3 from both sides so that the 3.3 on the variable side will turn into 0 and will not count.

-0.8 = k + 3.3

-0.8 - 3.3 = k + 3.3 - 3.3

-4.1 = k + 0

Since the zero does nothing, you can just get rid of it:

-4.1 = k + 0

-4.1 = k

Answer: You need to subtract 3.3 from both sides.

c.) 19 = 19 + k

Nothing special. We need to subtract 19 from both sides so that the 19 on the variable side will turn into 0 and will not count.

19 = 19 + k

19 - 19 = 19 - 19 + k

0 = k + 0

Since the zero does nothing, you can just get rid of it:

0 = k + 0

0 = k

Answer: You need to subtract 19 from both sides

c.) m + k = n

Now this might look a bit harder but it's not. They are simply throwing in variables to confuse you. But you subtract m to make k isolated just like we did with the other ones.

m + k = n

m - m + k = n - m

k = n - m

Answer: You need to subtract m from both sides.

The main thing is to get K by itself, so subtract or occasionally add whatever is on the equal side with k.

a) subtract 14 so it would be 0-14 = k

b) subtract 3.3 so it would be 2.5 = k

c) subtract 19 so it would be 0= k

d) subtract n so it would be m - n = k

a) k = -14

b) k = -4.1

c) k = 0

d) k = n - m
